Food and essentials at no cost at The Gloss, 26 Point Pleasant, SW18, on Sunday 18 October, 12pm to 3pm, as City Welfare turns a beauty centre into a shop.

A beauty business centre on Point Pleasant will spend Sunday afternoon as a supermarket where nothing costs anything. The Gloss, 26 Point Pleasant, SW18 1GG, will hand out food and essential items free to individuals and families facing financial hardship on Sunday 18 October, from 12pm to 3pm.

The afternoon is led by City Welfare, which sent the details to Wandsworth News this morning. The Gloss is a two-storey building that is normally given over to beauty and business; for three hours on Sunday it will be stocked and laid out as a shop instead.

What City Welfare says

City Welfare says the space, “ordinarily dedicated to beauty and business”, is being repurposed “into a place of practical support for households facing financial hardship”.

“As household budgets remain under pressure, the event aims to help people access everyday necessities in a welcoming environment, with dignity and without the added worry of cost,” the organisation said.

It describes the afternoon as a demonstration of “how local businesses and community organisations can work together to respond to the needs around them”, and the release is headed “Beauty business centre becomes free supermarket to support Wandsworth families”.

What it means for you

If money is tight this month, this is an afternoon where you can pick up food and household basics without paying. City Welfare’s announcement does not mention a referral, a voucher or booking, and it does not list what will be on the shelves, so arrive within the three hours and expect stock to depend on what has been donated. City Welfare can be reached on 07599 362886 if you want to check anything before you set off.

If you are coming by train, check before Sunday: there are no Southern trains to or from London Victoria on 18 October, and buses replace them from Clapham Junction.
