Wandsworth Roadworks: A3 Signals, No Victoria Trains 18 Oct

The A3 through Wandsworth town centre is the road to watch this week. Wandsworth High Street has temporary signals at the Buckhold Road junction, in both directions, until Friday 16 October for emergency utility works. TfL rates it as moderate disruption, the highest of any entry in the borough on its register.

In Balham, Bedford Hill stays shut at night into a second fortnight. The council’s resurfacing closure between Elmfield Road and Culverden Road ends on 13 October. A new night closure between the rail bridge and The Spinney, for Cornerstone telecom works, runs from 12 to 24 October.

The weekend to plan around is on the railway. On Sunday 18 October no trains run to or from London Victoria. Southern’s trains are diverted to London Bridge, and replacement buses run between Clapham Junction and East Croydon via Wandsworth Common and Balham. Then on Saturday 24 and Sunday 25 October the District line is shut again through East Putney and Southfields.

What is closed on the roads now

• Wandsworth High Street (A3), SW18 has temporary signals at the Buckhold Road junction for emergency utility works, 9 to 16 October. This one is on TfL’s register rather than the council bulletin, and TfL does not name the utility.
• Bedford Hill, SW12 is closed at night from Elmfield Road to Culverden Road for resurfacing until 13 October. It is also closed at night between the rail bridge and The Spinney for Cornerstone telecom works, 12 to 24 October.
• Putney High Street, SW15 has multi-way signals at night at the Putney Bridge Road junction for highways maintenance, 5 to 31 October.
• Blackshaw Road, SW17 closes at night from Tooting High Street to the second Kenlor Road junction for resurfacing, 13 to 16 October.
• Lower Richmond Road, SW15 closes at night outside numbers 107 to 111 for resurfacing, 16 to 17 October.
• Mapleton Road, SW18 is closed at the Garratt Lane junction for emergency Southern Gas Networks work, due to finish on 14 October. There is also a lane closure next to Mantle Court, 7 to 14 October.
• Dents Road, SW11 is closed at the Bolingbroke Grove junction for a Thames Water leak, due to finish on 14 October.
• Queenstown Road, SW11 has multi-way signals outside number 372 for emergency Thames Water work, due to finish on 14 October.
• Carminia Road, SW12 is closed from the side of 13 Elmfield Road to 1 Carminia Road for Openreach, 12 to 14 October.
• St John’s Road, SW11 has two-way signals outside number 81 for Thames Water, 14 to 18 October.
• Beaumont Road, SW19 stays closed outside numbers 171A and 177 until 12 October, and at the West Hill junction until 13 October, for Thames Water.
• Battersea Park Road (A3205), SW11 keeps its eastbound lane restrictions at Pump House Lane for Cadent Gas until 19 October, on TfL’s register. Last week it was booked to end on 5 October.
• Albert Bridge Road, SW11 has a lane closure outside Albert Mansions for TfL on the night of 15 October.

Several entries carried here last week have gone. The Tooting High Street contraflow and the Balham High Road signals are no longer on TfL’s register. Balham Park Road, Welham Road, Solna Avenue and Wroughton Road have dropped out of the council bulletin. Lavender Gardens, booked last week to stay closed until 20 December, is not in this week’s list either. The council does not say whether that closure was cancelled or moved, so check before you rely on the road being open.

Wandsworth Bridge: the works are done

Wandsworth Council said on Friday 2 October that the bridge’s maintenance and improvement works had been finished “under budget and weeks ahead of schedule”. They began on 26 May and were due to end in late October. The council has not published the budget or the final cost. (Wandsworth Council, 2 October 2026)

The bridge does not appear in this week’s bulletin, and TfL’s register carries no entry for it. The planned week of full overnight closures for resurfacing never got a public date. The council’s announcement lists carriageway resurfacing among the finished work but does not say when it was done.

The new permanent layout is one northbound bus lane, one northbound traffic lane and one southbound traffic lane, with stepped cycle tracks and wider pavements on both sides. What changed and what it means for you.

Long runs that will outlast the autumn

Nine Elms Lane is still running two clocks. TfL’s register books the lane closures at the Ponton Road junction to 29 January 2028. The council’s bulletin still says the Nine Elms Lane works are “expected to be complete by autumn 2026”. A second TfL entry, for the westbound lane closure between Wandsworth Road and Ponton Road, is booked to 15 April 2027, and a third, at the Wandsworth Road junction, to 3 February 2027. This week the bulletin also moved the Ponton Road signals back, from 3 February to 22 March 2027. The Nine Elms cluster of Cringle Street, Kirtling Street and Ponton Road has been under works since early 2025. It is also the part of the borough where the housing target is being delivered, so the construction traffic is not going anywhere.

The Thames Water mains programme in Battersea

Thames Water’s Hampton 3605 mains replacement is working through the streets between Battersea Rise and the western edge of Clapham Common, closing them one or two at a time. This week’s list has two new streets and one long slip.

Wakehurst Road was due to reopen on 12 October. It is now booked to 20 November, which would make it a closure of more than five months. Gowrie Road has slipped from 12 to 23 October. Wroughton Road and Lavender Gardens are no longer on the list. Thames Water’s own Hampton 3605 project page was last updated on 23 July and gives Wakehurst Road as “around 16 weeks” from 15 June.

Albert Bridge, still shut, still without a date

Albert Bridge (SW11) has been closed to motor vehicles since 7 February 2026, when a routine inspection found a crack in a cast iron component at one of the bridge abutments. It stays open to pedestrians and cyclists, and traffic is diverted via Chelsea Bridge and Battersea Bridge. The bulletin for the week of 12 October repeats that it “will remain closed until further notice”.

The bridge belongs to Kensington and Chelsea, which is spending up to £8.5 million on the repair. Its progress log was updated on 29 September. The only September entry is a social media post about using satellite imagery to monitor movement in the structure. The log records these stages so far:

• June 2026: grit blasting began on the rocker bearings in the northern abutment, the first physical repair work
• July 2026: information boards installed at both ends of the bridge
• August 2026: repainting of internal walls and parapets under way, and a bid submitted to the Department for Transport’s Structures Fund

Successful Structures Fund bidders are due to be announced in autumn 2026. Kensington and Chelsea says it will reopen the bridge “as soon as it is safe to do so in 2027”, with no definitive date. (Kensington and Chelsea, Albert Bridge repairs)

TfL’s register now carries the closure at the Chelsea Embankment end, booked to 28 February 2027. That is a booking on the road network, not a reopening date, and the council that owns the bridge has not given one.

Trains: no Victoria on 18 October, no District line on 24 and 25 October

Sunday 18 October: no trains run to or from London Victoria all day. Southern’s trains that normally use Victoria are diverted to London Bridge on an amended, reduced timetable. Replacement buses run between Clapham Junction and East Croydon, calling at Wandsworth Common and Balham, then Streatham Common, Norbury, Thornton Heath, Selhurst and West Croydon. No Gatwick Express runs at all. (National Rail)

Tickets are accepted at no extra cost on several alternatives that day. The useful ones here are:

• South Western Railway between Waterloo and Clapham Junction or Queenstown Road (Battersea)
• the Northern line between Balham and Embankment or London Bridge
• bus 170 between Victoria and Clapham Junction, and bus 44 between Victoria and Battersea Park
• buses 156 and 334 between Battersea Park and Clapham Junction
• bus 255 between Balham and Streatham Hill

Saturday 17 October is a reduced Southern service between Victoria and Clapham Junction. Trains from Battersea Park to Victoria do not run; travel via Clapham Junction instead.

Saturday 24 and Sunday 25 October: no District line west of Edgware Road and Embankment. TfL lists no service to Ealing Broadway, Kensington (Olympia), Richmond or Wimbledon, with replacement buses. East Putney and Southfields have no trains all weekend, for the second time this month. South Western Railway from Putney, Earlsfield and Wimbledon is the nearest rail alternative. Next weekend’s District line closure, on 17 and 18 October, is between Turnham Green and Ealing Broadway and does not reach this borough.

Other changes worth knowing:

• Southern, Monday 12 to Thursday 15 October, late nights: the 23:42 Watford Junction to Clapham Junction will not run. The 22:10 East Croydon to Watford Junction terminates at Shepherds Bush. The 23:07 Epsom Downs to Victoria will not call at Battersea Park. The 23:58 Victoria to Streatham Hill terminates at Balham, with a bus on to Streatham Hill. (National Rail)
• Southern, Friday 16 October: the 23:42 Watford Junction to Clapham Junction runs up to 10 minutes late between Shepherds Bush and Clapham Junction. (National Rail)
• South Western Railway, Sunday 18 October: buses replace trains between Barnes and Teddington, and between Barnes and Hounslow, via Richmond. Trains to Windsor and Reading run via Brentford instead. (National Rail)
• South Western Railway, 24 and 25 October: buses replace trains between Staines and Hounslow or Twickenham. (National Rail)
• Mildmay line, 24 and 25 October: from 19:30 on Saturday until 12:00 on Sunday, a reduced service runs between Shepherds Bush and Clapham Junction, with no service north of Shepherds Bush to Willesden Junction.
• Southern, Sunday 25 October: no trains between Balham and Crystal Palace, Norwood Junction or Sydenham all day, and no Victoria to London Bridge trains. Tickets are valid on bus routes 201, 249, 255, 315, 322, 417 and 432 between Balham and Crystal Palace. (National Rail)

Further out, National Rail has already posted two November Sundays at Clapham Junction:

• Sunday 1 November: no Mildmay line or Southern trains between Clapham Junction and Willesden Junction or Watford Junction. (National Rail)
• Sunday 8 November: buses replace Windrush line trains between Surrey Quays and Clapham Junction via Denmark Hill. (National Rail)

Southern’s own planned engineering work page still cannot be read. It loads its content with JavaScript, so a plain request returns nothing. Everything above for Southern comes from National Rail and TfL instead. Check Southern’s page before travelling.

The routes that carry the borough

Between programmes, the same handful of roads decide how Wandsworth moves.

• The A3 enters at Putney Hill and runs out over Putney Heath to Tibbets Corner and the Robin Hood roundabout. When TfL closes slip roads here overnight, everything routes through Putney High Street instead.
• The A205 South Circular crosses the borough through Putney and up to the bridge, sharing tarmac with the A3 for part of the way. It has no alternative worth the name.
• The A24 runs Balham High Road to Tooting High Street and Tooting Broadway. It is the borough’s busiest shopping spine and its most signal-heavy corridor.
• The A3220 Queenstown Road links Chelsea Bridge to Queens Circus and Battersea. Its corridor upgrade finished with overnight resurfacing in March 2026. (Wandsworth Council)
• The Wandsworth one-way system around the town centre ties the bridge, the A3 and the A205 together. It is where a bridge delay becomes a borough delay. Armoury Way, part of that system, loses its nearside eastbound lane until March 2027.

One boundary point catches people out. Wandsworth Road is in Lambeth and Wandsworth Bridge Road is in Hammersmith and Fulham. Works listed under those names are another council’s, and Wandsworth’s bulletin flags them as such.

The resurfacing programme behind the cones

Not all of the disruption is utilities digging up finished roads. The council runs a ten year programme it calls the Decade of Renewal, launched in February 2024. It has more than doubled annual spending on roads and pavements, from £4.6 million in 2023/24 to £10.25 million in the year to April 2026, funded from developer contributions.

By April 2026 that money had resurfaced more than 14.7 km of road and refurbished over 27.2 km of pavement. It also replaced or repaired around 1,000 street name signs, including 400 heritage plates, repaired over 500 streetlights, completed road markings on every A and B road in the borough, and filled 1,140 potholes. What it means for you

If you drive through Wandsworth town centre, expect queues on the A3 at Buckhold Road until 16 October. The signals run in both directions.

If you take Southern from Balham or Wandsworth Common, Sunday 18 October means a replacement bus to Clapham Junction or a Northern line train from Balham. Nothing runs into Victoria that day.

If you use the District line from East Putney or Southfields, plan around Saturday 24 and Sunday 25 October now. The whole Wimbledon branch is shut both days.

If you drive through Balham at night, Bedford Hill is closed in sections until 24 October.

If you live off Northcote Road or Battersea Rise, Wakehurst Road now stays shut until 20 November, and Freke Road closes from 14 October to 10 November.

If you cross Wandsworth Bridge, the works are over. The bus lane, the cycle tracks and the wider pavements are the permanent layout.
