Smugglers Way tip opens 9am to 4pm weekdays, 8am to 6pm Saturday, 8am to 5pm Sunday. Drivers must book a slot and bring ID. Van rules and Christmas closures.

Wandsworth’s only tip is the household waste and recycling centre at Smugglers Way, SW18 1JS. If you are driving there, you have to book a slot first and bring proof of address. Vans are not allowed in at all: they go to one of two transfer stations instead, with different hours.

The quick answer

  • Opening times: Monday to Friday 9am to 4pm, Saturday 8am to 6pm, Sunday 8am to 5pm.
  • Arriving by car: book a slot online (up to seven days ahead, usually same-day) and bring ID showing your name and address.
  • Christmas: the council’s page lists it closed on Christmas Day, Boxing Day and New Year’s Day, but its 2025 Christmas page said “open as normal”. Check before you go.

The hours are from Wandsworth Council’s Smugglers Way page. The centre is run by the Western Riverside Waste Authority (WRWA) for Wandsworth, Lambeth, Hammersmith and Fulham and Kensington and Chelsea.

The recycling centre has a 2 metre height barrier. Vans, cars over 2m high and cars towing trailers are turned away and have to use a transfer station. The council’s pages for the Smugglers Way transfer station and Cringle Dock say residents must register first and show photo ID to avoid being charged for household waste. Neither takes reusable items, and both have fewer recycling options than the main centre.

The recycling centre is for residents only. Businesses are directed to the waste contractor, Cory, on 020 8871 3924.

Booking a slot

WRWA’s booking FAQs set the rules:

  • You can book up to a week ahead, and WRWA says there is usually a slot the same day.
  • You need your name, address, a mobile number or email, and your car registration. Hire cars and taxis have their own button and need no registration number.
  • There is no limit on the number of visits, but you cannot book back-to-back slots.
  • You get a confirmation within seconds and a reminder the day before, each with a link to cancel or move the booking.
  • If you cannot book online, Wandsworth Council will book you in on 020 8871 8558, Monday to Friday, 9am to 5pm.

Booking is needed on every day of the week, not only weekends: WRWA says the system is there to stop non-residents using the site as well as to cut the queues that used to reach back to the Swandon Way roundabout. Walking or cycling in needs no booking.

The ID rule

Every visit by car or motorbike needs ID showing your name and address. WRWA’s valid ID page accepts a driving licence, a council tax bill, or a utility bill, bank statement, rent or mortgage statement or tenancy agreement dated within the last three months. It can be shown on your phone. A clearly displayed residents’ parking permit also counts. Staff run spot checks through the day, and without ID you will be turned away.

DIY and building waste

Rubble, plasterboard, bathroom suites, kitchen units, doors, fencing, soil and similar “fixtures and fittings” count as DIY waste, and the limits are tight. From WRWA’s DIY waste page:

  • By car: small quantities are taken free at the recycling centre.
  • By van: up to 100 litres, or one large item no bigger than 2m by 0.75m by 0.7m (a bath, a door, a kitchen unit), once every seven days, free if you pre-book and bring ID.
  • Over the limit: charged by weight at £286.70 a tonne, with a minimum of £154.82 a load. Or come back after seven days.

Van visitors need sturdy footwear and a high-vis vest, which can be borrowed from the weighbridge office. Furniture, carpets, electricals, garden waste and ordinary recycling are household waste and have no limit.

Reuse and the newer recycling bins

Rework, the reuse workshop on the Smugglers Way site, takes furniture (sofas need a fire label), white goods whether working or not, working small electricals, bikes, sports gear, toys, tools and bric-a-brac in good condition, according to WRWA. It can only be reached by car, not van. It also sells refurbished appliances online with a six-month warranty.

Since August 2026 the centre has taken coffee pods: WRWA announced a Podback station in Bay A, with plastic and aluminium pods in separate bins.

Christmas and bank holidays

The council’s Smugglers Way page, last updated in October 2025, says the recycling centre is closed on Christmas Day, Boxing Day and New Year’s Day. The Smugglers Way transfer station page gives the same three days. Cringle Dock closes on Christmas Day only.

The council’s own Christmas 2025 services page, as archived on 8 December 2025, said instead that the centre “will be open as normal over Christmas”. The two council pages disagree. In 2026 Boxing Day falls on a Saturday, normally the longest day of the week, so it matters. The booking system will only offer slots on days the centre is open, which is the quickest check.

Getting there
